An 11-year-old boy was allegedly thrown into a burning tandoor (clay oven) during a wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh's Basti district after he ate rasgullas at a food stall, police said on Friday.

The incident took place on the night of April 15 in Malauli Gosai village. The child, identified as Chaman alias Amar, is a resident of Gonda and had been staying with his maternal grandparents in Basti. He had accompanied his grandmother to attend a relative's wedding.

According to police sources, the catering contractor was angered after the boy repeatedly took rasgullas from the food counter. The contractor allegedly first intimidated the child and then, in a fit of rage, picked him up and placed him onto the burning tandoor.

During the struggle that followed, the boy lost balance and fell into the clay oven. Family members rushed to his rescue after hearing his screams and pulled him out, but by then he had suffered severe burn injuries from his face down to his waist.

He was initially taken to a local hospital and later referred to Lucknow Medical College. Police said his condition is currently stable.

An FIR has been registered in the case, and efforts are underway to arrest the accused.

Deputy SP Swarnima Singh said police took immediate cognisance of the incident and initiated action to ensure the accused is arrested at the earliest.
