Over the past 30 months, more than 12 people have died in paragliding-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh.

A 27-year-old tourist from Gujarat died after suffering serious injuries in a paragliding crash near Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district.

The deceased, identified as Satish Rajesh, was on a tandem paragliding flight with pilot Suraj when the paraglider lost control shortly after take-off from the popular Indru Nag Paragliding Site on Sunday.

The paraglider reportedly plunged into a ditch moments after lift-off. A video of the crash is now circulating on social media.

Still don’t get how people trust adventure sports in India. Another life lost in Indrunag Dharamshala — 25 year old Satish from Gujarat. Satish sustained serious injuries in the crash. He was first taken to Zonal Hospital in Dharamshala and later referred to Tanda Medical College in Kangra, where he succumbed to his injuries on Monday. The pilot, Suraj, is currently undergoing treatment.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) City, Hitesh Lakhanpal, confirmed that the victim’s family has been informed, and the body will be handed over after post-mortem procedures are completed. He also stated that a thorough investigation has been ordered to determine the cause of the crash and whether there was any negligence or violation of safety protocols.

The local Station House Officer (SHO) has been asked to lead the inquiry, and a letter has been sent to the tourism department requesting an internal review of the incident.

This latest tragedy has once again raised concerns about the safety of paragliding operations in the region. Notably, the accident occurred just days before a planned seasonal ban on all adventure activities, including paragliding, from 15 July due to the onset of the monsoon.

Earlier this year in January, another tourist from Gujarat, identified as Bhavsar Khushi, died after falling during a tandem flight at the same paragliding site. That month alone saw two more fatal paragliding accidents in the region.

Over the past 30 months, more than 12 people have died in paragliding-related incidents in Himachal Pradesh. Officials say that many of the deaths involved free fliers entering risky areas without proper knowledge of local wind patterns and topography.
