Cauvery Calling launches drive to plant 1.2 crore trees across Tamil Nadu

COIMBATORE: Marking World Environment Day, spiritual leader Sadhguru’s Cauvery Calling movement on Thursday launched its annual plantation drive across Tamil Nadu with a target of planting 1.2 crore trees during 2026-27. The campaign was inaugurated simultaneously at more than 140 locations in the state.In Coimbatore district, the drive was launched on the Adiyogi premises and in Pollachi. Koundampalayam MLA Kanimozhi Santhosh inaugurated the campaign at Adiyogi while former MLA M Shanmugam and other dignitaries participated at the Pollachi event by planting saplings.District-wise targets have been fixed for the plantation programme, with Coimbatore assigned eight lakh saplings and Tirupur 2.75 lakh saplings.

As part of the launch, more than one lakh saplings were planted on parcels of farmland in the state, covering 317 acres under tree-based agriculture.According to the organisation, the Cauvery Calling movement has so far facilitated the planting of 13.4 crore trees and supported 2.6 lakh farmers in adopting agroforestry practices. The initiative aims at rejuvenating the Cauvery river basin while improving farmers’ livelihoods through tree-based agriculture.

The movement provides subsidised saplings of timber and horticultural species, along with free technical guidance on plantation and maintenance. It has received accreditation from the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification and the United Nations Environment Programme.
