The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday (August 23, 2025) coordinated the return of a fugitive wanted by Jharkhand Police in an extortion case from Azerbaijan through Interpol channels.
The police had registered a case against Sunil Kumar in 2022 on the allegation of sending threatening messages through WhatsApp to demand extortion money.
“The subject Sunil Kumar is a member of Aman Sahu gang using the fake name Mayank Singh. Aman Sahu is a gangster of Jharkhand whose associates are operating as an organised criminal gang... Sunil Kumar has been threatening business personnel, coal transporters, and railway contractors for extorting money. Several cases have been registered against him in various States in India,” the agency said.
The CBI had got an Interpol Red Notice issued against him on October 10, 2024, following a request from the State police. Subsequently, an extradition request was sent to the Azerbaijan authorities on January 7, 2025, through diplomatic channels.
“More than 100 wanted criminals have been returned to India in the past few years through coordination via Interpol channels,” the CBI said.
