The move is likely to create another point of tension with Tehran, which considers the strait a major source of leverage in its ongoing negotiations with the US.

The United States launched a fresh wave of military strikes against Iran on Saturday, with US Navy and Air Force fighter jets targeting 10 Iranian military sites at multiple locations in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation was carried out in retaliation for Iran’s drone attack on the tanker M/T Kiku, according to U.S. military officials.

In a post on X, US Central Command said that US military aircraft targeted Iranian military “surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, drone storage facilities, and minelayer capabilities" following an attack on a merchant vessel early on Saturday morning.

It later specified that the strikes involved 10 Iranian military targets at multiple locations in and near the Strait of Hormuz.

Fresh strikes in the Persian Gulf have once again raised fears that the Iran conflict could spiral beyond control, despite an interim agreement between Iran and the US aimed at paving the way for a final deal to end the war.

Trump, in a social media post, said the US had “struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN!" He also warned that there could come a point when the US would no longer be able to remain reasonable, “and will be forced to militarily complete the job."

“If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!" Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The latest escalation comes days after a similar exchange, when an Iranian drone hit a merchant vessel off the coast of Oman on Thursday, prompting retaliatory US strikes the following day.

Tanker Kiku

The US Central Command said Iranian forces carried out a one-way drone attack on the oil tanker Kiku during the latest incident. The vessel, carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil, was transiting the Strait of Hormuz at the time.

Ship-tracking data showed that the Kiku had departed a Qatari oil field earlier this week and was headed to a port in the United Arab Emirates on the Gulf of Oman, located just beyond the Strait of Hormuz.

The tanker appeared to be sailing along a route near Oman’s coastline, an alternative corridor established in place of the Iran-sanctioned passage through its territorial waters.

On Saturday, a multinational maritime body overseen by the US Navy announced that the Omani route would be expanded to accommodate both inbound and outbound shipping. The move is likely to create another point of tension with Tehran, which considers the strait a major source of leverage in its ongoing negotiations with the US.

The U.S. military said “Iran had a chance to honour the ceasefire agreement" but “elected not to" when its forces attacked the Kiku.
