“Lawyers are lifetime readers and learners. However, let reading be your sanctuary, not just a duty,” retired professor G.B. Patil of Karnataka State Law University, Hubballi, has said.

Delivering a special lecture on “Changing Dimensions of Legal Knowledge” at the Department of Law, Central University of Karnataka, here on Friday, Prof. Patil emphasised that reading should not be viewed merely as an academic requirement, but as a source of joy, resilience, and emotional balance.

“In the relentless demands of the legal profession, books are both stress-busters and happiness multipliers. They rejuvenate the mind, fuel creativity, and help maintain the emotional balance essential for professional excellence,” he noted. He added that legendary jurists possessed not only analytical rigour but also the joy of mindful reading that sharpened their interpretive skills and courtroom effectiveness.

Echoing this sentiment, Prof. T.R. Maruti from the University of Mysore highlighted the often-overlooked virtue of listening. “Listening is the silent superpower of law. The practice of ‘Sit and Observe’ transforms legal knowledge into wisdom. Attentive listening fosters the clarity of observation crucial for persuasive advocacy,” he said.

Basavaraj M. Kubakaddi, Head of the Department of Law, stressed the need to bridge the gap between theoretical insights and courtroom realities.

Faculty members Anant D. Chinchure, Renuka Gubbewad and. Jayant Boruah, along with students and research scholars from the department, were present.
