Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (March 11, 2026) said that the Central government’s goal was to create a developed Tamil Nadu for a developed nation.
“The Central government is fully committed to the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. We are working day and night for the State’s progress and we will continue to do so”, the Prime Minister said speaking at an official function organised at Panjapur in Tiruchi.
Mr. Modi unveiled the foundation and dedicated to the nation multiple developmental projects worth ₹5,600 crore in the energy and highways sector besides project for rural connectivity in Tamil Nadu. He flagged off five new express trains including two Amrit Bharat expresses on the occasion.
Stating that the new projects were important ones for the future of Tamil Nadu as they were related to infrastructure, clean energy, petroleum related manufacturing, highways, railways and rural roads, he said they would boost energy access connectivity and create thousands of jobs for the youth of Tamil Nadu.
Unveiling the foundation for the Bharat Petroleum City Gas Distribution Network, Mr. Modi said an investment of about ₹3,700 crore had been made for this project. This network would cover Nilgiri and Erode districts and provide piped natural gas to nearly nine lakh families and hundreds of commercial organisations.
Piped gas would flow directly to homes boosting ease of living, Mr. Modi said and pointed out that thousands of jobs would be created directly and indirectly. The positive environmental impact of this project over just eight years would be similar to planting of four crore trees.
Dedicating the Indian Oil Corporation’s Lube Blending Plant at Chennai, Mr. Modi said this was one of the world’s largest facilities of its kind. The plant fulfills the demands of many important industries both in Tamil Nadu and outside. The increase in local production of lubricants also reduces imports and saves money for the nation.
Inaugurating the rural roads in Tamil Nadu spanning 370 kilometres, Mr. Modi said these roads were not just a piece of physical infrastructure but would provide access to patients seeking better healthcare and enabling students to travel to their schools and colleges comfortably and help farmers to travel to different places to sell their produce and buy inputs.
Unveiling the foundation for the construction of a bypass to Gangaikondacholapuram in the Kallagam - Meensurtti section of National Highway-81, Mr. Modi said the existing highway passed very close to the temple causing safety concerns to the pilgrims and tourists. With the construction of the new bypass, vehicles would be diverted away from the temple ensuring safety for everyone.
Flagging of the new trains including the Nagercoil - Charlapalli Amrit Bharat express, Podanur - Dhanbad Amrit Bharat express, Rameswaram - Mangaluru express and Mayiladuthurai - Karaikudi express, Mr. Modi said the new services would increase tourism, boost local economy and create many jobs for the youth.
