The Centre has ordered the deployment of four additional companies of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to Leh from Jammu and Kashmir, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

“Four CRPF companies have been instructed to move to Leh immediately," a senior official said. The order for the movement of troops was issued on Monday.

Sources added that the troops have been directed to arrive at the earliest and will remain at the disposal of the local police.

“Since the UT has a small but scattered population spread across distant pockets, it was felt that additional troops must be deployed to maintain law and order," a senior government official explained.

Sources also confirmed that a top-level official of the CRPF is also likely to visit Leh soon.

Security agencies are said to be closely monitoring the situation, and further deployments have not been ruled out if fresh intelligence inputs indicate emerging challenges.
