The government is all set to introduce new parameters to rank police stations in India for cities.
The Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) has been directed to identify and introduce new parameters for ranking police stations in urban areas, marking a significant step towards making the existing evaluation framework more comprehensive, inclusive, and aligned with the evolving challenges of modern urban policing.
The new benchmarks are expected to include steps taken by the police to address the concerns of the non-local population, a growing and often vulnerable segment in India’s rapidly expanding cities, along with the adoption, monitoring and use of modern technology and social media platforms as instruments of effective urban policing.
The move comes as an expansion of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)’s existing Ranking of Police Stations framework, which currently evaluates stations on parameters such as infrastructure, population coverage, CCTV deployment and women help desks. However, with Indian cities witnessing unprecedented demographic shifts driven by migration and urbanisation, authorities have acknowledged that the current framework falls short of capturing ground realities faced by urban police stations.
The idea was given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a meeting.
By introducing parameters around non-local and migrant population outreach, the government aims to ensure that police stations are not only responsive to settled residents but also accessible and sensitive to workers, students and migrants who form a significant part of urban populations.
The inclusion of social media and modern technology adoption as ranking criteria is seen as a forward-looking measure, pushing urban police stations to leverage digital platforms for public outreach, grievance redressal, crime prevention and community engagement.
BPR&D has been tasked with consulting IITs, forensic experts, academia and industry stakeholders before finalising the revised parameters. Officials believe the enhanced ranking system will drive accountability, improve service delivery and bring urban policing in line with the demands of a digital and diverse India.
