CG issues advisory to students on private universities, lists five checks before admission

Raipur: Chhattisgarh Private Universities Regulatory Commission has asked students and parents to verify the legal status and recognition of private universities before enrolling, warning against misleading claims and unauthorised institutions. In an advisory, the commission said prospective students should carry out five basic checks before taking admission to safeguard their academic future and avoid falling prey to fraudulent practices. The commission said students must first verify whether the university has been formally established under the Chhattisgarh Private Universities (Establishment and Operation) Act, 2005, and notified by the state govt.It also said a private university can admit students only after its statutes and ordinances have been published in the state gazette. Admissions granted before such notification would be considered unauthorised. The regulator further clarified that private universities in Chhattisgarh function as unitary institutions and are not permitted to affiliate colleges or conduct courses outside their own campuses or constituent schools.

Students have also been advised to ensure that the programme they intend to join is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and is included in the university’s notified ordinances. For PhD admissions, the commission said candidates should verify that the university has eligible full-time research supervisors as prescribed under the UGC Regulations, 2022. It cautioned that research guidance through external supervisors is not permitted under the regulations.Commission secretary Ashok Agrawal urged students and parents not to rely solely on advertisements or promotional claims made by institutions. He advised them to verify all approvals and regulatory status through the commission’s official website or by contacting its office before finalising admission. The advisory comes at a time when admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes are underway across private universities in the state.
