Raipur: Growing up, Satyanshu Deep was slower than normal children in grasping his lessons at school and was also impaired by limited cognitive abilities. However, the lad from Chhattisgarh’s Dhamtari, now 25, never let his intellectual disability shackle his dream.
Balancing a daily-wage job as a sanitation worker with his education at a school for children with intellectual disabilities, Satyanshu charted a course few would dare.Having found his true calling in football, the 25-year-old is now set to represent India at the Gothia Special Olympics Trophy 2026, which is to be hosted in Sweden’s Gothenburg from July 12 to 16.Born and raised in an economically disadvantaged family, Satyanshu supports his household sweeping streets as a sanitation worker for a private contractor associated with the Dhamtari Municipal Corporation, in the free time he gets when he is not attending his classes at Sarthak School, an institution for the specially abled aided by the state social welfare department.As prepares to take the global stage, Satyanshu has to take a leave from work and his school to fulfil his long-held dream of representing his country in sports.Recognising his passion and talent for sports, the school administration gave him the training and support needed to develop his potential, the director of Sarthak school, Sarita Doshi, told TOI, adding that the 25-year-old battles a 45% intellectual disability.
After receiving word of his selection for the Special Olympics, Satyanshu left for Gwalior which is hosting a national training camp for the football team from July 1 to 9.The team will travel to Delhi on July 11 before flying to Sweden, Doshi said.Sharing the hard work that saw him earn a spot in the national squad, his school director said that he was picked through a rigorous selection process conducted by Special Olympics Bharat-Chhattisgarh.
Satyanshu progressed through the district, state and national trials before impressing selectors at national coaching camps held in Gandhinagar, Gwalior and Puducherry.All travel formalities, including his visa, have been completed for his departure to Sweden, Doshi said, acknowledging the guidance he received from Special Olympics Bharat-Chhattisgarh state director Pramod Tiwari and sports expert Ravi Jain, who provided a competitive platform and mentored special athletes at her school.Ahead of his departure, the school presented Satyanshu with a complete travel kit.Congratulating Satyanshu on his selection and his family, coaches and the social welfare department for their supporting roles, Dhamtari Collector Abinash Mishra said, “His selection for the Special Olympics is a deserved reward for his hard work and dedication to football,” Mishra said, adding, “I am confident he will perform exceptionally well at the Special Olympics and do his country, Chhattisgarh and Dhamtari proud.
”The collector said Satyanshu’s journey to the international stage illustrates how resolve, combined with proper guidance and encouragement, can break down barriers of disability.
