A new District Central Library building, built at a cost of ₹3 crore, was inaugurated in Chamarajanagar on Monday by MSIL Chairman and MLA C. Puttarangashetty, on Monday.

The new facility was inaugurated with the aim of promoting reading and supporting aspirants of competitive examinations.

The library, located on the premises of the Block Education Officer’s office, has been constructed jointly by the Department of Public Libraries, Bengaluru, the district administration, the Zilla Panchayat and the District Central Library.

After inaugurating the building, Mr. Puttarangashetty inspected the newspaper reading room, book repository, lift and auditorium. He said the modern library fulfilled a long-pending demand of book lovers in the district. The project was funded with ₹1 crore from the Department of Public Libraries and ₹2 crore from the special grants (6%) of urban local bodies.

The library houses 6,080 books and has been established in the heart of the city to serve students, researchers, book lovers and the general public. While about 95% of the construction work has been completed, additional funds are required for the compound wall and other infrastructure.

Mr. Puttarangashetty said efforts would be made to mobilise funds through CSR initiatives and the MSIL to complete the remaining works.

On the district’s educational growth, the MLA said the establishment of medical, engineering, law and agriculture colleges had strengthened infrastructure for higher education in Chamarajanagar, and the new library would provide an ideal platform for students preparing for competitive examinations. He also assured that additional books would be procured based on readers’ needs.

Chairman of the Urban Development Authority Mohamed Asgar Munna said the library would serve as a valuable knowledge centre for students and the public, helping aspirants perform better in competitive examinations.

Deputy Commissioner Shreerupa described the inauguration as a memorable occasion for students, book lovers and residents, particularly those from rural areas, and urged them to make full use of the facility.

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Mona Roth expressed confidence that the new library would help students from the district excel in competitive examinations and secure top ranks.
