Barcelona salvaged a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie thanks to a last-minute penalty by Lamine Yamal on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Liverpool suffered a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul for the second time this season.

Atletico Madrid compounded Tottenham Hotspur’s woes with a 5-2 victory, a disastrous night for visiting goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Bayern Munich is virtually assured of a place in the quarter-finals after a comprehensive 6-1 win over Atalanta in Italy.

At St James’ Park, Newcastle seemed set for a memorable night when Harvey Barnes scored in the 86th minute, converting a cross from Jacob Murphy for his sixth Champions League goal this season. However, Barcelona was awarded a penalty deep into injury time after Dani Olmo was fouled by Malick Thiaw. Yamal, who had a quiet game, scored with the final kick in the 96th minute.

This result makes Newcastle’s task more challenging as they head to Camp Nou for the return leg next Wednesday, aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the first time. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remained optimistic, stating, “There’s hope, of course, there is. We believe in ourselves, we believe in our capabilities. I think we’ve shown that today."

The winner of this tie is likely to face Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals. Diego Simeone’s side dismantled Spurs at the Metropolitano, with Julian Alvarez scoring twice. It was a particularly difficult night for Tottenham and their Czech goalkeeper Kinsky, whose previous two appearances this season were in the League Cup.

Kinsky’s error trying to clear the ball led to Marcos Llorente scoring Atletico’s opener in the sixth minute. Antoine Griezmann capitalised on another mistake by Micky van de Ven to double the lead. The match was just 15 minutes old when Kinsky’s failed pass gifted Alvarez with a goal, making it 3-0.

Kinsky was substituted by coach Igor Tudor after his humiliating performance, but his replacement, Guglielmo Vicario, could not prevent Robin Le Normand’s header from making it 4-0 midway through the first half. Pedro Porro pulled one back for Spurs, but Alvarez scored again early in the second half, and despite Dominic Solanke’s late goal making it 5-2, Tottenham’s hopes remain slim.

Bayern Munich’s dominant 6-1 victory over Atalanta confirmed their status as strong contenders for the competition. Michael Olise was in exceptional form, contributing significantly to the win. Josip Stanisic opened the scoring, and Olise doubled the lead midway through the first half. Olise then assisted Serge Gnabry for the third goal before half-time, with Gnabry also hitting the bar.

Nicolas Jackson scored the fourth early in the second half, followed by Olise’s 15th goal of the season. Jamal Musiala added the sixth, leaving Atalanta with little chance of a comeback despite Mario Pasalic’s stoppage-time goal.

Liverpool will need a significant improvement to overturn their 1-0 deficit against Galatasaray. Mario Lemina’s header from close range, assisted by Victor Osinhen, was the only goal of the match. Osinhen had a second-half goal disallowed for offside, giving Liverpool a lifeline for the return leg at Anfield. Liverpool boss Arne Slot acknowledged the challenge, saying, “It’s already a difficult place to come to, but when you’re 1-0 down it makes it even harder."
