The horrific assassination of popular conservative activist Charlie Kirk has shaken the sports world. The New York Yankees held a moment of silence mourning Kirk’s death while Hall of Famer and NBA legend Dwight Howard expressed his frustration at the climate of violence that has gripped the world.

Kirk was just 18-year-old when he co-founded a youth movement called Turning Point, an advocacy group that is aimed at spreading conversative ideas in US colleges.

On Wednesday, the 31-year-old Kirk was speaking at the Utah Valley University (UVU) and responding to a query on gun violence when he was shot. He recoiled in his chair with blood spurting out from a wound as was visible in the graphic videos of the incident being shared on social media.

Reacting to the incident, Howard wrote “Pray for the world, violence is never the answer".

New York Giants quarterback Jaxon Dart, who was born in Utah termed the assassination as “disgusting and sad".

“Praying for him and his family. Charlie did great things for our country!! Political Violence NEEDS TO STOP!! Pray for our country man. This is disgusting and Sad!!!: Dart wrote on Instagram.

Former New England Patriots receiver Julian Edelman wrote, “Doesn’t matter where you land on in the political landscape. Violence like this is never acceptable."

Patrick Beverly, former Clipper guard prayed for Kirk’s family and kids. “RIP Prayer for his Family and Children!!! Damn, Sad," he posted on X.

Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. admitted that he isn’t familiar with Kirk’s work but condemned the shooting claiming that the public figure was killed for “sharing his opinions".

“RIP to Charlie smh… I never watched his stuff but nobody deserves to die like that. Man had a wife and kids… He was killed for sharing his opinions and giving others the opportunity to hare theirs as well. This is sad man… praying for the family!" Porter Jr. shared on Instagram.

US President Donald Trump called the incident as a “dark moment for America" while vowing to carry out a crackdown.

“My administration will find each and every one of those who contributed to this atrocity, and to other political violence, including the organizations that fund it and support it," the US president said in a statement.
