Chelsea have bolstered their attacking options (yet again) with the signing of England U-21 international Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund.
The Blues will pay an initial £48.5 million ($66 million) for the 20-year-old winger, with an additional £3.5 million in potential add-ons. Gittens returns to familiar surroundings, having spent part of his youth development in Chelsea’s academy before moving to Manchester City and later joining Dortmund in 2022.
During his time in Germany, Gittens made 107 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 17 goals—12 of which came last season across the Bundesliga and the Champions League.
“It’s a great feeling to join such a big club as Chelsea," said Gittens. “I can’t wait to learn from everyone in the team and to push myself to the max here. It’s an amazing feeling."
Fifth Summer Signing for the Blues
Gittens becomes Chelsea’s fifth signing of a busy summer, joining fellow forwards Liam Delap and Joao Pedro, midfielder Dario Essugo, and defender Mamadou Sarr.
Brazilian prodigy Estevao Willian, who scored against Chelsea in Palmeiras’ 2-1 defeat in the Club World Cup quarter-final on Friday, will also officially join after a deal agreed last year.
Despite the timing of his arrival, Gittens will not be eligible to play in Tuesday’s Club World Cup semi-final against Fluminense or a potential final.
Financial Pressure Mounts on Chelsea
Chelsea’s latest signing comes amid ongoing scrutiny of the club’s financial practices. On Friday, UEFA fined the club €31 million for breaching financial sustainability regulations, with a further €60 million suspended under a four-year settlement agreement.
With Champions League qualification secured, Chelsea must now balance their books. Under UEFA rules, the club cannot register new signings for European competition unless they generate more income from player sales than they spend on new acquisitions.
