Liam Rosenior has called for better discipline from his Chelsea squad after Pedro Neto’s red card on Sunday, their ninth of the season. Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium left them with just two wins in their last six games across all competitions.

Currently sixth in the Premier League, Chelsea is three points behind Liverpool as they face fourth-placed Aston Villa on Wednesday in the chase for a Champions League spot next season. Neto’s red card marks the seventh dismissal for a Chelsea player in the Premier League this season, adding to their disciplinary woes.

Rosenior, who took over from Enzo Maresca in January, stated that Neto apologised to his teammates following his 70th-minute dismissal. “My job is to create a culture of accountability," said Rosenior. He emphasised the importance of owning up to mistakes, including his own, and ensuring they are not repeated.

Rosenior mentioned that Pedro would miss the upcoming match at Villa Park and reiterated his call for improved behaviour from his players. He noted the issues with bookings for dissent and unnecessary fouls, stressing the need for conscious efforts to avoid such incidents if the team aims to progress.

According to Rosenior, addressing the issue involves more than just punitive measures. He pointed out the significant impact of maintaining a full team on their winning chances. “If you look at our stats, when we have 11 men on the pitch…our percentage chance of winning goes through the roof," he said.

He stressed the importance of positive reactions to setbacks, whether it be losing possession or disagreeing with a referee’s decision. Rosenior added that team selection would be influenced by players who demonstrate improved discipline. “I can’t afford to go through a season every two or three games with a red card," he concluded, underscoring the necessity for better discipline moving forward.
