Jadon Sancho will be moving back to Manchester United after Chelsea announced that their deal to secure the winger permanently fell flat. The Blues have decided not to match Sancho’s salary with the Red Devils owing to unsatisfactory performances. Having acquired him via loan until June 30, Chelsea was eyeing the 25-year-old on a long-term deal but will now send him back paying a £5m penalty.

Chelsea had landed Sancho last summer with an obligation to buy for £25m. But an option for the club to pay a penalty clause to terminate the agreement allowed officials to discuss whether the English footballer should remain on board. An inconsistent run this summer, with only 5 goals in 41 appearances, meant that the Blues were always unlikely to commit to Sancho for a long-term stint. Especially as the club shelled out £30m to sign Liam Delap, the Ipswich Town striker, after agreeing to pay off the release clause.

Sancho had the chance to cement his place in Chelsea’s plans, but his talent only came through occasionally. He had a role in the club’s Champions League qualification and even scored when Chelsea defeated Real Betis in the Conference League final last week. But a regular place in the playing XI remained elusive as Sancho suffered an alarming dip after Christmas.

Club officials have expressed admiration for the player’s talent and attitude but found his consistency to be a great problem. Chelsea failed to arrive at a deal that would have the former Dortmund sign up for a lower salary aligned with the club’s wage policy and constraints, further tightened by the Delap signing.

Sancho’s return to United now leaves him in an awkward spot. Distressed during his previous term with the club, he shifted to Dortmund on loan in 2021 after a controversial fall-out with Erik ten Hag. By the time United sacked Hag and hired Ruben Amorim, Sancho had joined Chelsea. It would be interesting to see where Sancho stands in Amorim’s plans as United aim to rebuild their squad after a disappointing season, falling 15th in the Premier League campaign and losing the final of the Europa League to Tottenham.
