In an official statement, Cheltenham Racecourse explained what happened and why the difficult decision was made.The statement said, “While running on the flat in the second race of the day, Hansard sustained a fatal injury. He was quickly dismounted and immediately attended to by a team of expert veterinary professionals.”The statement continued, “In their assessment, it was concluded that the best course of action for the horse’s welfare was for him to be put down and our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”News of the incident was also shared by Racing TV on social media platform X. The broadcaster posted, “Some very sad news to bring you. Hansard sadly sustained a fatal injury in the Arkle. Our condolences go to connections.”Following the incident, animal welfare group PETA also released a statement about the death. Elisa Allen, Vice President of Programmes at PETA, said the incident once again raised concerns about horse safety in racing.Allen said, “Cheltenham and horse racing have claimed yet another victim with the death of Hansard today.” She added, “Some 3,000 horses have died in UK horse racing events in the past decade, and 79 horse deaths at Cheltenham in the past 25 years alone.”Allen continued by criticising the sport, saying, “Forcing horses to race at breakneck speeds over obstacles invariably leads to crippling falls, heart attacks, and other fatal injuries.”The Cheltenham Festival is one of the biggest events in British horse racing, attracting thousands of spectators and millions of viewers worldwide.
