At the 10-acre site: Housing and urban development minister P Rajkumar inspects the bus terminus ahead of its inauguration
The new Chengalpattu Bus Terminus, built by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) at a cost of ₹131 crore, is set to be opened for the public in a month. Housing and Urban Development Minister P Rajkumar inspected the facility and reviewed the infrastructure ahead of its inauguration.Developed on a 10-acre site in the Chengalpet district, the suburban bus terminus has been designed to accommodate 57 buses at a time. Officials said the chief minister has directed that the project be made operational at the earliest.The terminus has been equipped with a range of passenger amenities, including drinking water facilities, toilets, waiting halls, an information centre, an emergency medical centre, a pharmacy, food courts and breastfeeding rooms for mothers.
Officials said the facilities have been planned to improve commuter convenience and meet modern standards for public transport infrastructure.More than 600 long distance buses will be operated to southern districts, Vellore, Tiruchi, Bengaluru, and Hosur from the new bus terminus. Spanning an area of over 40,000 sq.m., it will have 46 bus bays, car and two-wheeler parking facilities, commercial space, and restaurants.
“Chengalpet is a growth centre in the expanded Chennai Metropolitan Area. It is an important terminus for Southbound traffic. We are co-ordinating with MTC and other transport corporations to ensure sufficient bus services. Last and first mile connectivity will be ensured,” said a senior CMDA official.The minister reviewed the various facilities at the terminus with senior officials. The inspection was attended by CMDA member secretary A R Rahul Nath, Tamil Nadu Housing Board Managing Director S Prabhakar, and other officials.
