Chennai history-sheeter promises to marry policewoman, cheats her of gold, car, two-wheeler and Rs 42 lakh

CHENNAI: A history-sheeter has been arrested for cheating a woman police constable of 97 sovereigns of gold ornaments, Rs 42 lakh in cash, a car and a motorcycle by promising to marry her.

After the Royapuram police in Chennai registered a case against him, the culprit absconded, only to be traced and arrested near Kovalam on Saturday.The arrested man has identified as S Appu alias Sivaraman, 41, of Thiruvottiyur.The complainant, S Valarmathi, 41, is a police constable attached to the Ponneri police station in Tiruvallur district. A native of Bagayam in Vellore district, she has been living with her two children at the Singara Garden police quarters in Old Washermanpet after her husband, Saravanan, a paramilitary personnel, died in an accident in 2016.According to police, Valarmathi got acquainted with Sivaraman while she was serving at the Sathangadu police station. Sivaraman introduced himself as a native of Vellore, became close and promised to divorce his wife and marry Valarmathi. He subsequently took 97 sovereigns of gold jewellery, Rs 42 lakh in cash, a car and a high-end motorcycle from her on various occasions.Realising that she had been cheated, Valarmathi lodged a police complaint. She later moved a magistrate court, which directed police to register a case. Based on the court’s direction, the Royapuram police registered a case against Sivaraman, his mother and a few others last month.Sivaraman was arrested near Kovalam on Saturday and was remanded in judicial custody.
