RRTS Corridors in Tamil Nadu: Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has started exploring three Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridors across Tamil Nadu. The move will further strengthen connectivity in the southern state.

The RRTS is envisioned as a semi-high-speed (160–200 kmph), rail-based system that can carry large passenger volumes over inter-city distances in 30-60-minute trip times, much faster than road travel.

What is RRTS?

RRTS is planned to decongest the city by allowing faster reach to city centre from sub-urban areas. Currently, only 55-km section of the Namo Bharat Corridor between New Ashok Nagar in Delhi to Meerut South Station is operational for commuters. The stretch is a part of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor.

Tamil Nadu RRTS Project

The CMRL has launched three simultaneous feasibility studies to define RRTS networks that will link Cities of Chennai and Coimbatore with their neighbouring regional centres. In a statement, the CMRL said, “…appointed M/s Balaji Railroad Systems Private Limited as the Feasibility-Study Consultant for the three assignments.”

According to CMRL, the consultants will study alternate options of route for each planned RRTS lines, choosing station points, depot and smooth change-over points with other transport modes.

Festive offer

“This assignment will decide whether tracks should run on-ground, raised, or underground, land needs, environmental issues and broad project cost,” it said in a statement on August 1.
