Chennai woman constable dies by suicide; cop-husband arrested for abetment

CHENNAI: A 29-year-old woman police constable was found dead at her residence in Egmore on Wednesday night, and her husband, also a police constable, was arrested on charges of abetment to suicide.

The deceased woman’s family alleged that she was driven to her death by dowry harassment and sustained physical abuse.Bhuvaneswari, a native of Pulichapallam near Vanur in Villupuram district, joined the Tamil Nadu police in 2016 and was posted at the Avadi Battalion. At the time of her death, she was serving at the Egmore crime wing police station on special duty. She fell in love with Silambarasan, 31, an armed police constable attached to the Pudupet Armed Reserve of the Greater Chennai Police, and married him in 2024 with the consent of both families.

Silambarasan is a native of Puliyanjeri in Tiruvarur district.According to the family, Silambarasan subjected her to physical abuse, and the couple quarrelled frequently. On Wednesday night, Silambarasan returned home drunk and argued with Bhuvaneswari before going to bed. In the morning, Silambarasan found his wife hanging and raised an alarm.As she has died within two years of marriage, a mandatory revenue divisional officer inquiry has been ordered. Her body was sent to the Rajiv Gandhi govt General Hospital for postmortem.
