What began as a street quarrel over a barking dog ended in a brutal killing of the pet's owner in Chhattisgarh's Raigarh district late on Friday night. A 25-year-old man was attacked with an axe and died on the spot, while his uncle, who tried to intervene, was left seriously injured.
Police said the incident took place in Fittingpara village. The victim, Sujit Khalkho, had gone to a relative's house for dinner around 8.30 pm when three men arrived and launched an attack.
They struck him repeatedly with a sharp axe, fatally wounding him. His uncle, Suresh Minj, was also attacked when he tried to save him.
Officials said that the immediate provocation was a quarrel that broke out earlier in the evening when Sujit's pet dog barked at the accused while he was out walking it. The confrontation escalated into abuses and threats. Police said the attackers also had an old rivalry with the victim, which appeared to have deepened the hostility.
Following the attack, cops recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem. Three suspects, including two minors, have been arrested.
Raigarh Superintendent of Police Divyang Patel confirmed the arrests. He said preliminary investigation suggested both the dog-barking dispute and prior enmity played a role in the killing.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
