Chhattisgarh to deploy AI road monitoring system for PMGSY roads

RAIPUR: Chhattisgarh is set to deploy artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor the condition of rural roads built under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), with Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma directing officials to roll out an AI-based inspection system that will identify potholes, cracks and other defects through monthly video surveys.Chairing a high-level review meeting of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department, Sharma said the technology-driven system would improve transparency in road maintenance and enable faster repairs based on objective data rather than manual assessments.Officials said every PMGSY road in the state will undergo a monthly video-based inspection using an AI-enabled mobile application and dashboard developed for the purpose.

The system will automatically detect potholes, surface cracks and other damage, generating real-time reports on road conditions while reducing the scope for inaccurate field reporting.Based on the AI-generated data, the government will prioritise the most damaged roads for maintenance and prepare budget plans accordingly, Sharma said. The Deputy Chief Minister said the pilot project began on Saturday, under which one PMGSY road in each district will be inspected using the AI platform. The results of the pilot project will be analysed before the system is expanded across the state.
