Following his jersey retirement on January 25, 2026, Derrick Rose became the fifth player in Chicago Bulls history to have his jersey retired, joining legends Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Jerry Sloan, and Bob Love.
With the Chicago Bulls honoring Rose by retiring his No. 1 jersey, NBA legend and former Chicago Bulls star, Michael Jordan honored Rose, who is the youngest NBA player to have won an MVP award in the history of the NBA during his eighth season in the team. The moment marked an emotional celebration of one of the greatest careers in the franchise, even by the Bulls fans. The celebration was a heartfelt tribute to a player, who despite countless challenges, left a lasting legacy on both the team and the Chicago city.

During a video played as a part of the ceremony, Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan penned heartfelt words for Rose, “Derrick, congratulations on the retirement of your jersey. Very happy for you. You had an unbelievable career. You really represent the city of Chicago and the Chicago Bulls”. He continued saying, “I’m very proud of you and very happy for your special night. Looking forward to coming to the United Center and seeing your jersey hanging up there with my jersey”, a moment that connected with everyone in attendance.
Derrick Rose was selected the first overall pick in the NBA Draft of 2008. And immediately after joining the franchise, Rose delivered some of his exceptional performances by averaging 41.5 points per game every season with his time spent with the Bulls, leading him to become the youngest MVP in the franchise history in 2011 just at the age of 22. Even though injuries cut short his peak time in the Bulls, his impact on-court left a lasting imprint and couldn't be forgotten by the franchise and the fans alike.
LeBron James reflects on facing Derrick Rose, calls him his “humble fear”
LeBron James also shared a few words in tribute to the former Bulls star, with whom he shared the court during an Eastern Conference game. “Nothing but respect and a humble fear going against D-Rose. His talent, his speed, his athleticism, his craftiness, his mind. It’s no surprise, he still is the youngest MVP in NBA history”, James said. Getting recognition from two of the league's greatest legends, such as Michael Jordan and LeBron James, only highlights how special Derrick Rose's legacy truly is. Although he sustained several injuries during his time with the Bulls, what he achieved in Chicago was meaningful enough to secure his place among the most iconic players in Bulls history.
