The talks, which concluded on July 29, are seen as pivotal, especially with the current tariff truce due to expire.

Chinese officials remain hopeful that the truce will be prolonged
High-level trade talks between the United States and China concluded in Stockholm on Tuesday without a formal agreement. However, both sides remain optimistic about the possibility of reducing tariffs and extending a truce in the near future. The discussions, part of the third round of negotiations, come at a critical time as the two economic superpowers seek to stabilise relations strained by trade tensions and protectionist measures.
According to Bloomberg, China’s Ambassador to Singapore, Cao Zhongming, expressed optimism following the talks, commending the US for its diplomatic approach. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, July 30, Cao said, “The US has shown a lot of good faith and patience in its negotiations with China. I believe in three months’ time, we can do a lot of things together."
US officials have echoed a similarly positive tone. As reported by CNN, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer described the two-day meeting as “constructive." Bessent added, “Just to tamp down that rhetoric, the meetings were very productive," though he noted, “We just haven’t been given that signoff."
The talks, which concluded on July 29, are seen as pivotal, especially with the current tariff truce due to expire on August 12. Secretary Bessent is expected to brief President Donald Trump on the outcomes before a final decision is made regarding an extension.
Chinese officials remain hopeful that the truce will be prolonged, with signs pointing towards an eventual compromise. However, Bessent cautioned against premature conclusions, clarifying that no deal has been finalised without presidential approval. “The Chinese deputy minister did say that we had agreed on a pause. We have not. Nothing is agreed until we speak with President Trump," he said. He later told CNBC, “I think our Chinese counterparts have jumped the gun a little."
President Trump also addressed the ongoing discussions during a press briefing on Tuesday. “I just had a phone call from Scott [Bessent], and he had a very good meeting with China," he said.
