China has sent one of its newest and most powerful warships, the Type 055 Renhai-class guided-missile destroyer Dongguan, on its first long-range operational deployment into the Pacific Ocean. On June 30, the 13,000-tonne destroyer transited the strategically important Miyako Strait between Okinawa and Miyako Island, prompting the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) to deploy a Mogami-class frigate and a P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft to shadow the vessel and gather intelligence. The deployment is significant because Dongguan was commissioned only in March 2026. Its Pacific voyage marks a key milestone in the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s force-generation cycle and highlights China’s ability to bring newly inducted frontline warships to operational readiness within months.

The second batch of Type 055 destroyers is understood to incorporate internal upgrades to combat systems, sensors and electronic architecture.Dongguan was commissioned into the PLA Navy in March 2026 as part of the second batch of the Renhai-class, alongside its sister ship Anqing. Like other newly inducted major surface combatants, the destroyer underwent an intensive force-generation cycle involving crew training, combat systems validation, live-fire exercises and operational drills before being cleared for long-range deployment.

Its transit through the Miyako Strait and into the Pacific indicates that both the ship and its crew have achieved an initial level of operational readiness for sustained blue-water missions. The deployment shows that China is not only inducting advanced surface combatants at a rapid pace, but is also accelerating the training, integration and operational certification of new warships, allowing them to join frontline deployments soon after entering service. This growing efficiency has become a key factor behind the PLAN’s rapid expansion into a navy capable of conducting sustained operations far beyond China’s coastal waters.

The Type 055: China’s most powerful destroyerThe Type 055 Renhai-class is widely regarded as the most capable surface combatant in the PLA Navy and among the most powerful destroyers currently in service worldwide.Although China officially classifies it as a destroyer, its 13,000-tonne full-load displacement and extensive combat capabilities have led many Western naval analysts to compare it to a guided-missile cruiser.

The Type 055 serves as the principal escort for China’s aircraft carrier strike groups and can also function as a command ship for surface action groups during long-range deployments. The PLA Navy currently operates ten Type 055 destroyers and is expected to induct at least six more, taking the total number to 16.The ship has a full-load displacement of around 13,000 tonnes and is approximately 180 metres long. It is powered by four QC-280 gas turbines in a Combined Gas and Gas configuration, giving it a top speed of around 30 knots, or 56km/h.It can carry two helicopters for anti-submarine warfare, surveillance and search-and-rescue missions. The destroyer is equipped with 112 universal vertical launch system cells, with 64 located forward and 48 aft.Its missile arsenal includes HHQ-9B long-range surface-to-air missiles, YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles, CJ-10 land-attack cruise missiles, anti-submarine missiles and, reportedly, the YJ-20 hypersonic anti-ship missile.Dongguan’s deployment into the Pacific is therefore more than a routine naval transit. It reflects the speed at which the PLA Navy is transforming newly commissioned warships into operational frontline assets. As China continues to expand the world’s largest navy with advanced platforms such as the Type 055, the frequency and complexity of its blue-water deployments are expected to grow.
