Guwahati: Churachandpur district returned to normal on Saturday morning after two days of protests sparked by the participation of three BJP legislators from the Kuki-Zo and Hmar communities in the formation of Manipur’s new govt. The demonstrations, which began on Thursday, were largely confined to the stretch between Tuibong and Kangvai, unlike earlier unrest that spread across the district headquarters. Shops reopened in most areas, though several remained closed in Tuibong. Additional security forces were deployed to prevent fresh flare-ups.The protests were triggered after MLA Nemcha Kipgen joined the Y Khemchand Singh-led govt as deputy chief minister, with MLAs LM Khaute and N Sanate extending support.Tribal bodies had imposed a “total shutdown” in Churachandpur, while rallies were also held in Kangpokpi and Tengnoupal, accusing the legislators of betraying the community’s demand for a separate administration.Against this backdrop, the Zomi Council headquarters in Lamka issued a statement saying all 10 MLAs belonging to the Zomi, Kuki, and Hmar communities are equally responsible for the formation of the new govt. It described branding three of them as traitors as “unethical and uncalled for”.It also appealed to the central govt to expedite political talks for an immediate solution, while appreciating the vigilance of police, security forces, and village volunteers in maintaining peace.
