Shemar Stewart was expected to hit the ground running in Cincinnati. Instead, the Bengals’ prized first-round pick finds himself on the sidelines—not because of injury, but over a contract clause that's raising eyebrows across the NFL.

What should’ve been a routine rookie signing has turned into a cautionary tale, exposing Cincinnati’s risky approach to player negotiations.

Inside the contract dispute holding back Bengals’ top draft pick

NFL rookie contracts are typically finalized quickly, often within days of the draft. However, the Cincinnati Bengals have not yet signed their 2025 first-round pick, Shemar Stewart, due to a disagreement over contract language. The delay centers around a clause that would allow the team to void all remaining guaranteed money in the event of a default in any contract year. This language marks a departure from the Bengals’ previous contracts, which only permitted the voiding of guarantees for the specific year in which a default occurred. Stewart and his representatives have rejected the clause, citing concerns over its long-term implications.

According to Mike Florio on The Pat McAfee Show, the Bengals intended to introduce this clause for the first time in Stewart’s deal. His camp has made it clear that they do not wish to be the first to accept such terms.

“I’m 100% right, so it should be a no-brainer,” Stewart said when asked about the situation.

Ongoing negotiations create uncertainty ahead of Bengals' season

The Bengals are also managing a separate contract issue with veteran pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, compounding the organization’s internal challenges. With two defensive players in dispute, the front office faces growing scrutiny.

Stewart is currently missing offseason workouts, which could affect his integration into the team and overall development.

Although he has not publicly criticized the franchise, the ongoing delay raises concerns about the organization’s approach to negotiations. Also Read: Patriots WR Stefon Diggs responds to viral boat clip with evasive line: “I try to keep my personal life personal”While the clause may provide financial protection for the team, it also presents risks. The ongoing holdout could impact team chemistry and send a negative signal to current and future players. The Bengals’ decision to enforce such contract terms has created unnecessary tension ahead of the season.
