The 18th district conference of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) was inaugurated in Kalaburagi on Friday by State secretary Sunanda who strongly criticised the Union government for what she termed as its “pro-corporate policies and indifference to the working class”.

Addressing a gathering of workers and members of the public in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office after a rally from Jagat Circle, she alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has “no concern for the plight of the working class and unemployed youth” and is instead “serving the interests of corporate houses.”

“Working masses are suffering from joblessness and poverty. Contractualisation of the workforce was leading to exploitation of poor and vulnerable sections. The government is bent upon eliminating permanent jobs altogether and pushing the economy into pauperisation. On the other hand, hard earned labour rights are being snatched away,” she said.

As part of the day-long conference, delegates discussed various issues and passed resolutions urging the State government to expedite finalisation of the minimum wage structure, scrapping of Face Recognition System (FRS) in anganwadi centres, ensuring jobs for local construction workers, and rolling back the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The conference further resolved to continue with the existing office-bearers until the State-level CITU conference scheduled to be held in Hassan in November 2025.

Labour leaders Shanta Ghanti, M.B. Sajjan, Gauramma Patil, and others participated in the event. A public meeting was also held on Aiwan-e-Shahi Road as part of the proceedings.
