Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai on Friday offered a rare glimpse into his personal journey, and turned emotional as he spoke about his late father and the reason behind choosing a career in law. With visible emotion in his eyes and voice choked, the Chief Justice shared how his father’s aspirations shaped his own path.

While addressing an event in Nagpur, the Chief Justice became teary-eyed as he recalled his father’s dream for him to become a lawyer. He also recounted the struggles of his parents in raising him.

“I wanted to be an architect," he said, “but my father had different dreams for me. He always wanted me to become a lawyer, a dream he could not fulfil himself," the CJI said as quoted by news agency PTI.

Gavai spoke about his father’s dedication to BR Ambedkar’s cause and the burden his family carried.

“My father gave himself to the service of Ambedkar. He wanted to be an advocate himself, but couldn’t fulfil that wish as he was arrested for being part of the freedom movement," he said.

Raised in a joint family, Gavai recalled how his mother and aunt bore the responsibilities of the household after his father’s imprisonment.

To fulfil his father’s wish, he let go of his dream to be an architect, he said.

In a moving tribute, the Chief Justice remembered how his father, when his name was recommended for judgeship, said, “If you remain a lawyer, you will only go after money, but if you become a judge then you will walk on the path laid down by Ambedkar and do good for society."

His father also thought that his son would one day become the Chief Justice of India, but he did not live to see that happen, the CJI said.

“We lost him on 2015, but I am glad my mother is there," Gavai added.

Gavai’s emotional speech struck a chord with many in the audience, offering a rare glimpse into the personal motivations and legacy behind the country’s highest-ranking judge.

Gavai also hinted at writing a memoir after his retirement in November this year. “There are many personal and professional stories worth sharing," he said.
