A man posing as a fake resident doctor at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow targeted female students and was allegedly behind a religious conversion racket, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Hassam Ahmad, reached out to medical students from two other colleges as well, specifically targeting Hindu women. In one instance, he gave fake letters to women in the name of taking them to a conference at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi.

In a scene straight out of Catch Me If You Can, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, he also created an organisation named “Cardio Seva Sansthan Trust” and allegedly used it to take girls to camps in Muslim-majority areas.

The group display picture (DP) of the Cardio Seva Sansthan featured the photo of KGMU spokesperson Dr KK Singh.

According to the police, Hasham also charged fees from patients. He has been arrested, and further interrogation is ongoing.

The incident came to light after KGMU formed an internal committee following allegations that a resident doctor, Rameez Uddin Nayak, sexually exploited a colleague under the pretext of marriage and compelled her to convert to Islam.

Incidentally, the internal committee is being led by Dr KK Singh, whose picture was used as the group display picture by Hasham for the Cardio Seva Sansthan.

During his MBBS studies in Agra, Dr Rameez allegedly converted and married a Hindu woman.

According to the police, several speeches were also held in the hostel at the behest of Dr Rameez.

Dr Rameez, who was posted in the pathology department at KGMU, allegedly pressured his colleague, also a medical professional, to convert to Islam and blackmailed her. The complainant alleged that he claimed to be unmarried and promised to marry her.

According to the police, the doctor met the survivor while studying in Agra. She has stated that in February 2025, the accused coerced her into religious conversion before taking her to Pilibhit to solemnise their marriage.

As the enquiry progressed, investigators identified and arrested several individuals believed to be involved in facilitating the process, including Dr Rameez’s parents, a local cleric, and a witness from Pilibhit.

The doctor along with his parents, Salimuddin and Khadija, were arrested last week.
