Mohammed Khan Ansari, a Class 12 student in Panchmahal, was arrested for slapping a woman invigilator at SJ Dave High School, sparking outrage after CCTV footage went viral.

A Class 12 student in Gujarat’s Panchmahal district was arrested after he allegedly slapped a woman invigilator who questioned him for arriving late to a preliminary examination, police said. The incident took place at a school in Shehra and later sparked widespread outrage after CCTV footage went viral.

According to police, the incident occurred on January 24 at SJ Dave High School during the second preliminary examination for Class 12 students. The accused, identified as 18-year-old Mohammed Khan Ansari, reportedly arrived late for the test. When the female invigilator asked him to explain his delay, he allegedly reacted angrily and said, “No one asks me anything at home, so who are you to question me?"

Police said the student then slapped the teacher on her cheek, pushed her and fled the classroom. The entire episode was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the school.

An FIR was registered on February 3 following public outrage over the video. The accused was later arrested and produced before a court, which granted him bail on Friday, police said.

Police Inspector Ankur Chaudhary clarified that the police had not “paraded" the accused but had instead reconstructed the crime to understand the sequence of events leading up to the assault.

Officials said the student’s father apologised to the teacher and the school’s in-charge principal, Vipul Pathak, on the day of the incident. However, matters escalated further on January 27, when the student allegedly returned to the school along with his father and a group of 15 to 20 people.

During this visit, the student allegedly threatened the teacher, telling her that she lived alone in the town and warning of harm, police said. The accused, however, claimed that he had gone to the school with others only to apologise to the teacher and school staff.

Further investigation into the matter is ongoing, police added.
