In a shocker for Assam, sexual assault of a Class 6 boy in a central government-run school in Kamrup district for three months has come to light. Seven Class 11 students have been detained.
The accused and the survivor are minors and are students of the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV), Rangia in Kamrup, NDTV reported.
According to the complaint filed by school principal, the Class 6 boy and the accused stayed at the boys’ hostel. The child initially remained silent due to fear but later wrote a detailed account to guardians his parents, who then approached the school authorities.
A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at Rangia police station, reported NDTV.
A juvenile court has sent the boys to a correctional home for 14 days. The survivor’s medical examination has been conducted. Police are recording statements of the accused and school authorities.
Police have said they are also looking at the role of school authorities and whether safeguards to prevent such activities on campus are in place. Footage of CCTV cameras on the school and hostel premises is being scanned for clues, police sources have said.
Incidents of harassment at JNVs in Assam Rangia
At JNV Moran in 2022: A group of 30–40 Class XI students from JNV Moran attacked a five-month pregnant teacher, verbally abused and threatened her when she informed their parents about student misconduct. A total of 22 students were suspended, the Navodaya Assistant Commissioner visited to investigate, and parents demanded stronger action against perpetrators. Separately, multiple reports emerged of ragging and abuse of junior students in the hostel, with allegations of beatings with belts and bamboo sticks. Parents complained of cover-ups by the administration.
At JNV Rangia in 2016: A Class IX student allegedly attempted suicide by consuming phenyl due to harassment by senior hostel students. The student’s mother filed a police complaint against the school authorities, alleging prior inaction despite informing the principal. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Sangathan initiated an inquiry, and the school principal was issued a show cause notice.
A 2013 government report had acknowledged growing sexual abuse in JNVs, following a high-profile case of rape in Tripura that resulted in pregnancy. In response, the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti issued a 14-page guideline to all schools clearly defining the forms of abuse, emphasizing zero tolerance, and outlining consequences under POCSO provisions.
