Cloudburst threat puts Nashik district on high alert; schools, temples & markets shut; forts being barricaded

Police and NMC teams requested people living in vulnerable areas to shift to safer locations following the cloudburst warning

Nashik: The district was placed on high alert on Monday after chief minister Devendra Fadnavis warned of a possible cloudburst-like rainfall event in the Trimbakeshwar-Igatpuri-Nashik belt on Tuesday, with some pockets likely to receive up to 300mm of rain within a short period.Citing forecasts of an intense low-pressure system over the Arabian Sea, Fadnavis directed the district administration to take all precautionary measures to prevent loss of life and property.In response, district collector Ayush Prasad announced a series of preventive steps, including closure of schools and colleges in Nashik, Trimbakeshwar, Igatpuri, Peth, Dindori and Surgana talukas. Weekly markets in these areas will also remain shut."In view of the warning, the district administration and the District Disaster Management Authority have initiated precautionary measures," Prasad said.As a safety measure, the Trimbakeshwar temple and Saptashrungi temple at Vani will remain closed until Wednesday morning, with authorities urging pilgrims to postpone their visits.The administration is also preparing to shut roads vulnerable to flooding and landslides.

The police have begun barricading forts, waterfalls and monsoon tourist hotspots to prevent public access.Residents of low-lying and flood-prone areas have been advised to remain alert and shift to safer locations if required. People have also been urged to avoid unnecessary travel, not venture through flowing water and stay away from landslide-prone areas. Farmers have been advised against entering fields during the warning period.To strengthen emergency preparedness, an SDRF team has been requisitioned from Dhule, while govt officers and employees have been directed to remain at their headquarters. Control rooms across departments have been activated.Irrigation authorities have been instructed to closely monitor reservoirs and barrages and release water whenever necessary. Public works officials have been placed on standby, while health authorities have stocked essential medicines and cancelled staff leave. Railway authorities have also been alerted as the Mumbai-Delhi rail corridor passes through rain-prone Igatpuri taluka.District officials appealed to residents not to panic but to strictly follow official advisories as the district braces for what could be one of the season's most intense rainfall events.
