Dibrugarh: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday made a significant announcement at a poll rally in Nazira under Sivasagar district, saying the total number of assembly seats in Assam could increase by 63 in the future due to the implementation of women’s reservation — potentially taking the tally from the existing 126 seats to 189.Addressing a large gathering in support of BJP candidate Mayur Borgohain, who is locked in a high-profile contest against sitting Congress MLA and leader of the opposition in the Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia, the CM used the occasion to make a pointed promise regarding the abolished Amguri assembly constituency.“There is a possibility that 63 more seats will be added to the existing 126 Assam assembly seats due to women’s reservation.
And when that happens, we will try to revive the abolished Amguri Assembly seat again,” Sarma declared before the crowd. The Amguri constituency was dissolved following delimitation, with one part merging into Sivasagar and the other into Nazira. Acknowledging the emotional connect that residents continue to feel toward their former constituency, the CM sought to reassure them.“After delimitation, one part of Amguri constituency went to Sivasagar and one part went to Nazira.
People of Amguri desire that their constituency should remain. But till we revive it, no government offices from Amguri will be shifted. Everything will remain the same. If possible, we will establish one or two more offices in Amguri,” he said.Turning to the electoral battle at hand, Sarma made a strong pitch for Mayur Borgohain, urging voters to back the BJP candidate and extend the momentum of the party’s governance record in the state.
He highlighted the achievements of the BJP govt in Assam and stressed the advantages of a double-engine govt — with the same party in power at both the state and central levels — in accelerating development.“The double-engine govt has delivered roads, welfare schemes, and transformation across Assam. Voting for Mayur Borgohain means voting to continue this progress in Nazira,” Sarma said. The Nazira contest is being closely watched as one of the most politically significant battles of the current election cycle, pitting the BJP’s candidate directly against one of the Congress’s most prominent faces in the state assembly. With the CM personally campaigning on the ground, BJP is clearly leaving nothing to chance in the prestigious seat.
