Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday announced that the state government will soon extend a cashless health facility of up to 5 lakh rupees per year to Loktantra Senanis—individuals who fought against the 1975 Emergency. Addressing a commemorative event in the state capital on the 51st anniversary of the Emergency, observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, the Chief Minister also declared that the final rites of all Loktantra Senanis will henceforth be conducted with full state honours.

The Chief Minister emphasised that honouring these freedom fighters is a matter of profound pride for the state, noting that they willingly endured severe imprisonment and personal suffering to preserve the nation’s democratic fabric. He stated that the state government remains deeply committed to safeguarding the welfare of those who stood against constitutional subversion.

Detailing the administrative support currently extended by the state, the Chief Minister informed that Uttar Pradesh presently has 3,780 registered Loktantra Senanis along with 1,461 dependants. Since 2018, the state government has been providing a monthly honorarium of 20,000 rupees to these individuals, a benefit that transfers to their dependents upon their demise. Furthermore, they or their surviving spouses, along with one co-passenger, are entitled to free travel across all categories of Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation buses, alongside existing free medical care at state-run hospitals.

The newly announced cashless healthcare facility of 5 lakh rupees annually aims to further streamline medical access for the aging cohort. The Chief Minister remarked that these systematic honours and welfare provisions serve a broader historical purpose, ensuring that future generations remember and respect those who prioritised the national interest and democratic values over personal safety.

The commemorative event witnessed emotional testimonies from several Loktantra Senanis who were formally felicitated by the Chief Minister, including Bharat Dixit, Gaya Prasad Sonkar, Ram Singh Kushwaha, Vidya Ram Verma, Ajay Singh, and Om Prakash Gupta, all of whom had faced extended incarceration during the mid-1970s.

Sharing his ordeal from the stage, Bharat Dixit stated that the Emergency was imposed solely as a mechanism for the Congress party to retain power at any cost, recalling the aggressive nature of political arrests and the subsequent satyagraha launches. Adding to the historical account, Vidya Ram Verma detailed the severe state-sponsored excesses of the era, describing how security forces surrounded residential homes during night raids and subjected political prisoners to brutal custodial torture, including the pulling out of nails and forced sterilisations within prison complexes.

The event concluded with senior cabinet ministers, legislators, and state officials paying tribute to the assembled veterans, affirming the state’s resolve to institutionalise the memory of their constitutional resistance.
