Brazil were touted to don a red coloured away jersey at the World Cup 2026, but the idea was widely derided, citing the association of the colour with the nation's ruling party.

Brazilian Football Federation President Samir Xaud revealed that he had ordered a halt to production of the red away jerseys for the National team following political backlash on Wednesday.

The five-time World Cup winners were touted to don a red coloured away jersey, but the idea was widely derided, citing the association of the colour with the nation’s ruling party- the Workers Party of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

The new of the new colourway broke in April earlier this year, and Xaud opined that he was personally against the red colour drip too, however, the motivation wasn’t political.

“Blue, yellow, green and white are the colors of our flag and these are the ones that must be used," said Xaud.

Red is the color of the Workers Party of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, while supporters of the right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro typically wear Brazil’s traditional colors of green and yellow at political rallies.

He mentioned that people’s political preferences influenced the debate over the away jersey’s color. The team’s home jersey is yellow with green trim.

Nike agreed to stop production and started making a blue shirt as the away jersey, according to Xaud, who took over his position in May. The red jersey production began under his predecessor, Ednaldo Rodrigues.

When news of the red jersey initially surfaced, renowned sports columnist Paulo Vinicius Coelho commented that the decision showed a lack of “political sensitivity."

“Even more so because the party that has dressed politics up in yellow could confuse it with the color of another party," he wrote.
