The BJP on Friday welcomed the government’s directive to Netflix to take down the teaser and other promotional material for the film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ from social media, saying any attempt to insult or harm the reputation of any section of society is unacceptable.
A controversy was triggered over the title of the film, with politicians and social media users calling it casteist, which led the director Neeraj Pandey and lead actor Manoj Bajpayee to clarify that they did not intend to hurt anyone and that they are withdrawing all publicity related to the movie.
This followed the government’s directive to Netflix to remove the teaser and other promotional content from social media.
Senior BJP leader Anurag Thakur welcomed the government’s action, saying, ‘The central government’s order to remove the controversial teaser and all related content of the film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ from Netflix is welcome and commendable.’
He added, ‘We condemn any act done with malice against the Brahmin community or any other community.’
Thakur said the BJP and the Narendra Modi government have the highest respect for all sections of society and strongly support maintaining the dignity and integrity of every community.
He added that any attempt to insult or damage the reputation of any group is ‘completely unacceptable to us.’
Madhya Pradesh BJP chief Hemant Khandelwal also welcomed the government’s action and said any malice against any community, including Brahmins, is ‘unacceptable under any circumstance.’
He condemned the film’s title and said attempts to insult or damage the reputation of any group cannot be tolerated ‘at any cost.’
In a post in Hindi on X, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said, ‘We wholeheartedly commend the government’s quick and decisive action! Offensive content, like the derogatory film ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’, has not only been removed from the platform, but an FIR has also been registered in the case.’
He said this sends a clear message that insults to Sanatan Dharma will no longer be tolerated.
Bhatia added, ‘We are committed to taking the strictest possible action against those who insult any caste or community for commercial gain,’ and said, ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and Sabka Vishwas is our guiding principle.’
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak said the word “Pandit" has always symbolised scholarship and sacrifice, and that Brahmins have played a key role in nation-building. However, he said the film Ghooskhor Pandat, which was to be released on Netflix, unfairly targeted Brahmins and hurt their sentiments.
In a post on X, Pathak said, ‘I had requested the government of India to remove the film’s title. Accepting my request, the government of India issued strict instructions to remove this title from the OTT platform.’
He added that the government has directed that no inappropriate remarks targeting any community should be used in films, web series or other media, as such content creates social discord. He also thanked the government of India for accepting this demand.
Acting on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s instructions, police registered an FIR against the film’s director at Lucknow’s Hazratganj police station late Thursday evening.
The FIR was filed on charges of spreading social animosity, hurting religious and caste sentiments, and trying to disturb public peace, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a statement on Friday.
