The State government has directed the formulation of a detailed master plan to oversee the long-term expansion of Paripally Medical College Hospital, aiming to shift its status from a primary referral hospital to a major healthcare facility.
Following a review meeting held on Monday to assess the functioning of the hospital, Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said that immediate staff shortages are being addressed with the upcoming recruitment of 50 nursing staff members, alongside a broader directive to fill vacant positions across all government hospitals Statewide. To enhance specialized care, a permanent cardiologist will be appointed to the hospital’s cath lab.
Additionally, a special meeting will be convened in Thiruvananthapuram shortly to finalize the construction of a new super-specialty block and the implementation of an advanced trauma care system.
The hospital’s diagnostic capabilities are set for a major boost with the introduction of 24-hour CT, MRI, and ultrasound scanning services. Infrastructural upgrades also include a proposed centralized cooling system, pending an evaluation report from an expert hospital committee. To support the student community, the nursing hostel facilities will be expanded, and a sports ground will be developed.
The development roadmap will utilize funds from MLA and MP asset development funds alongside various government schemes.
A restructuring of the Hospital Development Committee is also on the cards to streamline operations. Furthermore, a wage hike for contract pharmacists is currently under consideration, and a collaborative project with the local panchayat will establish a dog shelter to address the stray canine issue in the area. Urgent works will be integrated into the State’s 100-day action programme to ensure swift execution.
