Kolkata: Four-time councillor and Bborough V chairperson Rehana Khatoon was chased away by Congress workers when she went to Bidhan Bhavan to join the party. Some workers even pelted eggs at her and her supporters.
She had to leave the venue without joining the party.“I had gone to join Congress because I feel it is important to strengthen the hands of Rahul Gandhi in the fight against the BJP. We want the secular forces to get stronger. I had no other intentions,” said Khatoon.Khatoon was first elected councillor from ward number 44 in central Kolkata on a
CPM
ticket. She later switched to the
Trinamool Congress
and became the Borough V chairperson in 2021. Congress workers alleged that Khatoon and her supporters had been instrumental in poaching their workers and “capturing” Congress party offices in central Kolkata.As soon as news spread that she was at Bidhan Bhavan to join the party, hundreds of Congress workers reached the venue and prevented her and her supporters from entering the building. Several workers also pelted eggs at her. She was forced to leave the party office after waiting for more than an hour.“The sentiments of the workers are not in favour of Khatoon joining the party,” said a Congress functionary from central Kolkata.
