All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Chief Maulana Badaruddin Ajmal strongly criticised the Assam Congress, alleging that the party has failed to work for the welfare of minority communities.
“‘Let the Muslims die, we don’t care; but we need Muslim votes’—this is the motto of the Congress party," Ajmal said while targeting the Congress leadership.
Referring to eviction drives in the state, Ajmal claimed that not a single Congress leader spoke up to safeguard minority interests. “During evictions, no Congress leader stood for us," he alleged.
Ajmal further blamed the Congress for policies affecting minorities, saying, “Who introduced the IMDT Act, detention camps, NRC, and the foreigners’ issue? The Congress is responsible for all of these. Unfortunately, our people do not understand this. The Congress never wanted to educate minorities so that they could continue to mislead them."
Pre-Poll Alliance
Speaking on the possibility of a pre-poll alliance, the AIUDF chief said, “As of now, we are planning to contest the elections alone. However, if the Congress wants to come to an understanding, we have no objection. It is well established that to defeat the BJP in Assam, all opposition parties must unite. Unfortunately, the Congress does not seem to understand this."
Message in Zubeen Garg’s songs
Ajmal also praised the late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, calling him a true artist. During a late-night AIUDF meeting, Ajmal reportedly asked one of his followers to sing a song by Zubeen Garg. Later, speaking to the media, Ajmal said, “I am a Maulana, and as a Maulana I cannot directly listen to songs. But when a song is played nearby, I cannot close my ears. I listen to them occasionally."
He added that he is particularly fond of Zubeen Garg’s music. “I like his songs. There is a message in every song sung by Zubeen Garg," Ajmal said.
Ajmal’s Advice to Rezaul Karim Sarkar on jihad
Commenting on recent political controversies involving former minority student leader Rezauddin Karim Sarkar, Ajmal advised restraint in the use of sensitive terminology. “‘Jihad’ is a very holy word. Our Prophet said that fighting external enemies is a small jihad; the real jihad is fighting one’s inner sins and controlling one’s mind. Making the mind calm and steady is true jihad," Ajmal explained. He added, “I advised Rezaul not to use words like ‘jihad.’ Instead, he should continue his journey by engaging in meaningful and constructive actions."
