Constable attacked while breaking up drunken brawl; 5 held

Gadag: A constable who attempted to resolve a quarrel among youths, allegedly in an inebriated state, was attacked by them on Thursday night. The constable has been admitted to GIMS Hospital, and police have arrested five youths in connection with the incident.As per video clips circulating on social media, two groups of youths were quarrelling on the road at Drinks Factory Bar in the Dhobi Ghat area. Ashok Patil, a constable attached to Shirahatti police station, tried to stop the clash. However, members of both groups allegedly turned on Patil and attacked him. Ironically, another police officer in uniform is seen arriving at the spot but remaining a mute spectator.Gadag rural police said that a case has been registered.SP Rohan Jagadeesh told TOI that five youths were quarrelling at Dhobi Ghat. “One of our constables, who was off duty, intervened and stopped the quarrel with presence of mind. In the process, he sustained minor injuries. His effort is appreciated for stepping in even when he was not on duty. All five persons involved in the fight have been arrested and will be remanded in judicial custody. One among them is said to be a minor.

The ages of the others are yet to be confirmed as they have not produced age proof,” he said.
