Panaji: To ease traffic congestion across the Mandovi bridge, the construction of two larger and faster twin-screw ferry boats has commenced at Vijay Marine Services, Loutolim.
These new ferries are being designed specifically for the Panaji–Betim route and are expected to reduce vehicular load on roads by providing a quicker and more efficient river crossing alternative. Each ferry will have the capacity to carry up to eight cars or 200 passengers, offering a much-needed alternative for daily commuters, especially during peak hours. “The new vessels are expected to primarily cater to vehicular traffic from Calangute, Betim, and Porvorim, potentially diverting a substantial number of private vehicles from the congested bridge route,” a river navigation department official said.
“State govt is also considering the possibility of introducing a nominal fee for two-wheelers using the new ferry service,” he added. At present, Goa operates a total of 30 ferries across 18 different routes.
