Rajinikanth starrer gets relief in Singapore, storms box office

Superstar Rajinikanth's film 'Coolie' was released to a grand success worldwide on August 14. Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the film has set a record by grossing over Rs. 400 crore in its first week.

However, the film was given an 'A' certificate by the CBFC in India, making families hesitant to watch the film with their children.

Many fans accused 'Coolie' of being given stricter censorship, comparing it to films like 'KGF' and 'Beast', which had similar violent scenes and were given a 'U/A' certificate. As a result, a petition was filed in the Madras High Court on behalf of the production company, seeking permission to screen the film with a 'U/A' certificate.

4 minutes trimmed and runs with PG-13 in Singapore

But not in India, 'Coolie' gets a relaxation in Singapore, and the Singapore Censorship Board re-censored the film. According to Daily Thanthi, approximately 4 minutes of footage were removed with the approval of the film crew. As a result, the film's initial NC-16 (restricted to those under 16) certificate in the country was changed to PG-13 (for those over 13 with parental consent). As a result, the film has received a censor exemption so that it can be watched with the family in Singapore.

Now, fans in India are anticipating a similar practice in India.

Madras High Court adjourns the case to August 25

A hearing on the petition filed at the Madras High Court by the 'Coolie' makers for U/A was heared yesterday (Aug 20). As per News 18, the official counsel A.R.L. Sundaresan, appearing for the Censor Board, said that a U/A certificate would be issued if certain scenes were removed. But the production company said it had accepted the 'A' certificate and needed time to respond to the petition. After hearing the arguments of both sides, the judge asked the Censor Board to respond and adjourned the hearing to August 25.

'Coolie' has entered into second week of theatrical run, and the film reportedly grossed close of Rs 450 crore globally in 7 days.
