French tennis player Corentin Moutet grabbed headlines for the wrong reasons after his first-round win at the Queen’s Club Championships on Tuesday. The world No. 36 defeated fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a thrilling three-set contest.
However, it was his post-match television interview that became the main talking point. Moutet repeatedly used offensive language during a live BBC broadcast. It left viewers, commentators, and officials stunned. The incident happened shortly after he completed a hard-fought 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) victory in a match that had been carried over from the previous day.The 27-year-old was speaking on court moments after the win when the conversation took an unexpected turn.
Asked about a crucial point in the match, Moutet responded with strong language several times despite being warned by the interviewer. The live broadcast was being watched by families and young tennis fans. This made the situation even more controversial. The interview was eventually cut short. Tennis fans believe the ATP could review the incident and consider disciplinary action.
The episode has once again placed Moutet’s behaviour under scrutiny, adding another chapter to his long history of controversial moments on and off the court.
Corentin Moutet’s actions draw criticism after live TV incident
Corentin Moutet had just completed one of the biggest wins of his grass-court season when he was invited for a traditional post-match interview. During the discussion, he was asked about a remarkable moment when Mpetshi Perricard saved a match point with a powerful second serve that exceeded 140 mph.
While explaining his reaction, Moutet repeatedly used offensive language. Even after the interviewer requested that he avoid such words on live television, he continued using them.
The presenter later apologised to viewers before ending the interview.Back in the studio, BBC presenters expressed disappointment with the incident. Broadcaster Clare Balding noted that Moutet had once again shown the unpredictable side of his personality and remarked that creating chaos seemed to fit the image he often projects. Former British player Annabel Croft was even more critical and described the behaviour as unacceptable. The latest controversy is unlikely to help Moutet’s reputation. Over the years, he has been involved in several disciplinary issues. In 2022, he was disqualified at the Adelaide International after directing inappropriate comments towards an umpire. Later that year, he was fined following an on-court altercation with fellow player Adrian Andreev. His conduct also led the French Tennis Federation to remove its support and coaching assistance. At the time, the federation stated that it expected players to set a positive example and could not support repeated misconduct.Moutet now faces the possibility of another ATP fine as officials review the latest incident from Queen’s Club.
