Patriots released Stefon Diggs (Imagn Images)
Stefon Diggs did not need many words to mark the end of his brief run with the New England Patriots. A short Instagram story on Wednesday afternoon quietly closed the chapter. The message came only hours after news surfaced that the team had decided to move on from the veteran wide receiver, signaling a sudden shift in plans for both sides. The timing was hardly a surprise. Earlier in the week Diggs wiped his social media clean, and by Wednesday he had unfollowed the Patriots organization as well. The official confirmation soon followed when Tom Pelissero reported the move. Now the four-time Pro Bowl receiver heads toward free agency, and several teams searching for offensive help will surely take notice.
Stefon Diggs release could create a surprising opportunity for the Kansas City Chiefs
The release of Stefon Diggs arrives at a moment when the Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with uncertainty around their receiving corps. For a team led by star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, stability at pass catcher suddenly feels less certain than usual.
One reason is the legal situation involving receiver Rashee Rice, who faces a potential suspension after domestic assault charges. The Chiefs are also waiting on a major decision from franchise tight end Travis Kelce, who has yet to say whether he will return for another season or step away from the game. The possibility of multiple offensive pieces disappearing has already placed wide receiver high on Kansas City’s offseason priority list.
As Bradley Locker recently noted, the position may be the most pressing need on the roster.“The Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 seasons, with the team’s lack of reliable options at pass-catcher not helping the charge,” Locker wrote. “Kansas City now faces a crossroads of what to do with various players at receiver and tight end.”Several familiar names may also be leaving. Receivers Tyquan Thornton, Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster are all approaching free agency, creating even more uncertainty around the offense.Locker added another layer to the situation.“Even the returning Rashee Rice and Xavier Worthy aren’t sure bets, with both still having room to develop into consistent game-breakers,” Locker wrote. “The Chiefs will have to boost a group that produced the 21st-ranked receiving grade for Patrick Mahomes, although they won’t have much cap space to do so entering March with the lowest amount of any team.”On paper, Diggs might seem like the ideal short-term fix. According to Karl Rasmussen, the veteran receiver instantly becomes one of the most intriguing names on the market.“Diggs immediately becomes one of the best free agents in the 2026 class,” Rasmussen wrote. “He’s recorded more than 1,000 yards in seven of his last eight seasons, and has five seasons with 100-plus catches under his belt. In terms of career-long production, only Evans can rival him among the other receivers on the market.”Yet the equation is not so simple. Diggs turns 32 this season and is coming off injuries that could make teams cautious about a long-term deal.“At 32, however, it could be more difficult for Diggs to find a team readily willing to sign him to a long-term contract, and he may wind up playing next season on a short-term deal,” Rasmussen wrote. “He likely won’t see the type of deal [Alec] Pierce is expected to sign, which could end up being in the range of $25 million annually.”Even with those concerns, Diggs remains productive. Last season he posted 85 receptions on 102 targets for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns while working with young quarterback Drake Maye in New England.
His postseason numbers dipped, though, and the off-field distractions that have followed him throughout his career still linger in the background. For Kansas City, the decision could come down to risk tolerance. General manager Brett Veach now holds nine draft picks after a recent trade involving Trent McDuffie, including a top-10 selection that could land a promising young receiver.Diggs still chases the one thing missing from his résumé: a Super Bowl ring. If he hopes to change that soon, pairing with head coach Andy Reid and Mahomes might offer his clearest path.Whether the Chiefs are willing to take that chance remains the real question.
