A routine visit to an adult content website turned into a terrifying ordeal for a man after he discovered that a porn video featured him and his girlfriend without their knowledge.
In 2023, Eric (not his real name) and his girlfriend stayed at a hotel in Shenzhen, southern China. Weeks later, while browsing an adult content site, he came across a video that immediately felt familiar. Within moments, he recognised the hotel room, the sequence of events, and then, horrifyingly, themselves, according to a report in news outlet BBC.
Thousands Watch Hotel Footage
The footage, secretly recorded by a hidden camera in their hotel room, showed the couple entering the room, putting down their bags, and engaging in intimate acts. It had been uploaded without their consent and was accessible to thousands of viewers, the report mentioned.
Eric, from Hong Kong, described the experience as terrifying, revealing that the hidden camera had filmed nearly an hour of private moments. He had previously been drawn to secretly filmed videos because he found it more authentic than conventional adult content. “What drew me in is the fact that the people don’t know they’re being filmed," Eric, now in his 30s, told the BBC. “I think traditional porn feels very staged, very fake," he added.
His girlfriend was initially skeptical when Eric told her, but became horrified after seeing the video herself, fearing friends, family, or colleagues may have already watched it. The couple avoided talking for weeks, now taking precautions such as wearing hats in public and avoiding hotels whenever possible.
Spycam pornography has been circulating in China for over a decade, despite the country’s strict laws against producing and sharing porn. Hidden cameras are commonly placed in hotel rooms, prompting social media discussions on how to detect them. Some women even pitch tents inside hotel rooms to protect their privacy, the report further mentioned.
In April 2025, Chinese authorities introduced regulations requiring hotels to inspect rooms for hidden cameras, but the problem persists. A BBC investigation found over 180 hidden cameras in hotel rooms across the country, with thousands of videos still circulating online.
