The State of Maharashtra recorded 66 fresh COVID-19 cases on Tuesday (May 27, 2025), of which nearly half were reported from Mumbai (31), as per officials.

Pune reported 18 new cases, while other districts reported less than 10 cases each: Thane (7), Navi Mumbai (4), Pimpri Chinchwad (3), Sangli (1), and Nagpur (2).

Earlier on Monday (May 26, 2025), the total active cases in the State stood at 210, with 154 new cases added from May 19, 2025.

As per the latest data available on Monday (May 26, 2025) from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s COVID-19 dashboard, active cases in the country stood at 1,010. Kerala is leading the tally with 430 active cases.

In the past few weeks, India has increased its vigilance after an increase in COVID-19 cases in Singapore and Hong Kong was reported. According to experts, the JN.1 variant and its related descendants, which belong to the Omicron family, are causing the surge. The Health Ministry said recently that it has reviewed the domestic situation to assess risks, adding that “it remains alert and proactive, ensuring readiness to protect public health as the situation evolves”.

The Hindu had earlier reported that, according to the Union Health Ministry the cases being reported currently “are mostly mild, not associated with unusual severity or mortality.”

“Almost all of these cases are mild, with no hospitalisation required,” a Ministry source had added.
