U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, which has hailed the preliminary agreement with Iran as ‘historic’, seems to be leaving no stone unturned in presenting a unified picture on the West Asia conflict.
However, Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio appear to be at loggerheads over the peace agreement, particularly Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Speaking at the White House, Vance had lambasted Israeli critics of the preliminary U.S.-Iran deal, arguing that Israel’s bombing of civilian infrastructure in Beirut was undermining Washington’s efforts to bring peace to the region, Reuters reported.
Rubio –– who travelled across the Gulf this week, first since the war in West Asia began on February 28 –– backed Israel’s campaign against Hezbollah. When asked about Vance’s criticism, he seemed to sidestep and instead pointed to an assault by the Lebanon-based outfit on an Israeli checkpoint earlier in the week.
Diverse Takes On Iran?
Even as the Trump-led administration has stressed unity within his government on the Iran front, the diverse tones indeed creates a challenge before the White House as well as the future of the Republican Party, with both Rubio and Vance projected as potential candidates for the 2028 Presidential Elections.
Both the leaders were dispatched abroad to convey Washington’s stance on the war linked to Tehran. While Vance landed in Switzerland last week to hold discussions with the Iranian delegation, Rubio paid visit to Gulf countries –– the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Kuwait –– to meet the governments of the ally nations.
Not only this, but their takes on Iran seemed to be worlds apart.
Vance has consistently advocated the possibility of a new, more cooperative relationship between the U.S. and Iran, revealing in a recent interview that Washington had invited an Iranian intelligence official to serve as a deconfliction liaison with the Pentagon in Qatar, according to the Reuters report.
However, Rubio’s tone on Iran appeared hardcore. During his excursion to the Gulf, he highlighted that any deal with Tehran had to be ironclad as it was linked to Washington’s interests and those of its allies.
“While we want a deal, we don’t want a deal at any price," he suggested, assuring the allies that their interests would be protected.
‘There Is One Camp’
The White House outright rejected any divergence between the two officials, suggesting “there’s only one camp", which is under President Trump.
“There is one camp – President Trump’s camp – and the entire administration is fully behind the President’s efforts to ensure Iran can never possess a nuclear weapon," said White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly, Reuters reported.
Recently, the U.S. and Iran opened a 60-day ceasefire window, paving the way for negotiations between the two sides to end the conflict in West Asia.
